Century of Dishonor: A Sketch of the United States Government's Dealings
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp ()
Author: Helen Jackson
Average review score:

captivating, astute and indespensible
In "Century of Dishonor" author Helen jackson has written an indepth and scholarly account of the US government's policy of instiutionalized "Indian" extermination. Jackson's account of the infamous "Trail of Tears" in which 17,000 Cherokees were forcibly removed from their homes and driven at bayonet point to Oklahoma by the US Army,an unspeakable atrocity in which only half the Cherokee population survived. In her summation of the treatment accorded to the Cherokees, Helen Jackson writes that "In the whole history of our Government's dealing with the Indian tribes, there is no record so black as the record of perfidy to this nation. There will come a time in the remote future when, to the student of American history, it will seem well-nigh incredible."

"Century of Dishonor" remains essential reading for those who wonder where Hitler obtained the background material on concentration camps and genocide: US government frontier policy. A captivating, astute and indespensible addition to American history.

One of the most intriguing books of the 19C
Helen Hunt Jackson was the widowed wife of a succesful Pennsilvanian buisness man. She was acostomed to many trips to the frontier west, upon which she had many interactions with the local indians there. She was greatly distresed at their condition. Which led her to become an author. She once said that regalrdless of where you open the book on the american indian, there is not a year or page without a dark stain. This book was as influential on the people of her time as Harriet Beacher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was on the people in antebellum america. Certainly a must read for all history enthusiasts

Children of the Fur Trade: Forgotten Metis of the Pacific Northwest
Published in Hardcover by Mountain Press Publishing Company (October, 1995)
Author: John C. Jackson
Average review score:

Great Book!
Mr. Jackson did excellent research for this book. I have numerous ancestors mentioned in the book and even had a picture of one that I had never seen before. Anyone interested in the history of the Western Mt, Idaho and Eastern WA area, will need to read this book. I hope that the Author publishes more material from his research.

Found Heritage Through Review
From the book, I found out that the Metis of the Pacific Northwest formed many communities in that area. My great-grandparents were born in Walla Walla, WA. and we were told that they were French- Canadian and "Black Irish". I read that in Walla Walla, is where they founded communities and that they hid there ancestry and called themselves French-Canadian. So, on reading this, I found out that the missing part to my full heritage was actually a mixture of French and Native American Indian. I owe a great gratitude to Mr. Jackson. Thank-you!!! Sean

Classic Vegetarian Recipes (Classic Cookery Series)
Published in Hardcover by Smithmark Publishing (November, 1998)
Authors: Sue Ashworth and Felicity Jackson
Average review score:

A Wonderful Cookbook
This cookbook is the second best in my collection. The reason: virtually every thing we've tried has been a hit with the entire family. As new, part-time vegetarians we need all the encouragement we can get. The brilliant food photos will set your juices flowing. I think this book could make a vegetarian out of Sam Sheppard!(If you are abroad, Sam is the spokesman for the American Beef Counsel.) There is only one better in my opinion and that is Roz Denny's "The Complete Encyclopedia of Vegetables and Vegetarian Cooking." That book tells everything you need to know about veggies, even the exotic ones, and has the best recpies I've ever tasted.

Wonderful ! You'll never want meat again!
This is a great veggie cookbook. The recipes are tasty and easy to follow. The pictures of every dish add to the appeal so you can see what you're aiming for. The book covers all food courses so there is something for everyone.... except meat. A detailed delight of delectables !

Complete Nonsense of Edward Lear
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (June, 1951)
Authors: Holbrook Jackson and Edward Lear
Average review score:

King Lear
I was given this book by my father when I was seven years old and was thoroughly enchanted by it, and remain so to this day. The Owl and the Pussy Cat has passed into children's lore - many people know the rhyme through the song (was it Burl Ives?) or through new illustrated versions of it. They know the limericks (or at least the form, if not the rather esoteric content - the old man with the Beard, for instance, and the lady with the excessively long chin who

had it made sharp
and purchased a harp
and played several tunes with her chin).

But do they know of The Dong with the Luminous Nose, or the Pobble Who Has No Toes, or the short history of Violet, Slingsby, Guy, and Lionel? Or the illustrated botanical alphabet with such plants as the ManyPeeplia Upsidedownia (you'd have to see the drawing!) It would be impossible to say how many times I read, re-read, and enjoyed this book as a child and an adult, including the rather touching, affectionate introduction to the man himself.

Please, please buy this book. You'll never regret it.

Boshproducing Luminary
Edward Lear's limmericks, humorous poems and other nonsensical endeavours all collected into one volume. This book never fails to bring a smile on my face, even though I've quite outgrown its designated age group. I think Lear's work can appeal to anyone with a wry view of the world and an affinity for the mildly grotesque (whatever that means). Need I also mention the endearing sketches which decorate the book and Holbrook's most helpful introduction? In short, this is the ideal present for yourself or your loved ones.

The Cornbread Book: A Love Story with Recipes
Published in Hardcover by Morrow Cookbooks (25 March, 2003)
Author: Jeremy Jackson
Average review score:

Read it and eat!
I confess to not having tried a single recipe yet, but this book gets five stars from me just for the read. Jeremy Jackson is the next Edouard de Pomiane - very, very funny, surprising, smart, literate, and enthusiastic. Even if you hate cornbread (one word, note), you must have it. Buy it, read it, laugh out loud, and preheat your oven to 350F, because you, like me, will be dying to pup a butter-slathered hunk of cornbread down the hatch before you get half-way through.

Great recipes, hilarious anecdotes
This is the kind of cookbook that is as entertaining as it is useful. I've already used three of the recipes (my kids are big fans of cornbread in all its various forms), and all were winners. Gem & Pearl muffins are a decadent breakfast treat, and the two types of cornbread we made were a big hit: suffice to say that there were no leftovers. Next time we'll have to make double batches. Jackson is very funny and charming, and his deep appreciation for his subject comes through on every page. I think we'll be breaking this book out on a regular basis!

Dear Diary: What My Doctor Never Told Me About Liposuction
Published in Hardcover by 1stBooks Library (May, 2003)
Author: Kathyne L. Jackson
Average review score:

Loved It !
I loved this book. If you've always wondered what someone actually goes through after they go home from surgery, wonder no more. Kathyne Jackson told me everything she went through, some of which I have never read nor heard about. Now I really know what to expect.

ON THE BALL!
I gave this book to my sister who had liposuction and she said Kathyne Jackson told it just like it was. The pain, the chills, the uncertainties was everything my sister also went through. Before her surgery, she looked at other books, but they just gave general information. Kathyne goes into details. A MUST READ for anyone considering liposuction.

Dictionary of Scripture Proper Names of the Old & New Testaments
Published in Paperback by Loizeaux Brothers (June, 1909)
Author: J. B. Jackson
Average review score:

An excellent quick reference
A Dictionary Of Scripture Proper Names is a very straightforward guidebook to the meaning of biblical names not generally translated into their English meanings. Aside from a brief preface and pronunciation guide, it consists entirely of scriptural proper names and their literal translations. From Aaron (meaning "light-bringer") to Zuriel (meaning "my rock is God"), A Dictionary of Scripture Proper Names leaves no proper noun undefined. Especially recommended for Biblical Studies reference collections and reading lists, A Dictionary Of Scripture Proper Names functions as an excellent quick reference, and may also serve to assist anyone looking for appropriate-sounding scriptural names.

A very useful resource!
This book simply lists the names of people and places in the Bible and offers a brief definition of their meaning. It is a very useful resource for interpreting the Bible's deeper meaning, because when the meaning of a name is known, it can usually be seen to relate to the context in which it is found.

Dieting: A Dry Drunk
Published in Paperback by Universal Publishers (01 February, 2001)
Authors: Becky Lu Jackson and Joseph Mortola
Average review score:

freedom from the driving need to eat
The explanation of eating disorder akin to alcoholism, and the need to arrest the addiction, before causes and conditions clarifyies, edifies and brings much needed relief to the "dieter"

This book has been a life-saver!
This book contains a lot of wisdom and clarity about how eating disorders work, and how to arrest them, that isn't available in the vast dieting industry, and often not from the medical profession either. I have worked with Becky Jackson for several years concerning my own food and eating issues, and I have learned so much more than I did in any previous "diet" program. This book is NOT about dieting. Becky combines physical, emotional and spiritual recovery in her approach. My hope is that this book becomes more widely known, and that more people can benefit from Becky's experience and expertise, and from the stories of the recovery of others that are also in the book.

Doggie Doings : A Complete Reference for Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Teton Valley, Idaho
Published in Paperback by Two Mountain Press (07 May, 2000)
Author: Judy F. Eddy

Excellent Book for our trip to Jackson Hole w/our dogs
Imagine piling into the car with 4 kids, luggage and 3 dogs for your next vacation and not having any idea as to what you can do with the dogs once you get there. That was us last summer, heading off to Jackson Hole, and had it not been for this book which was refered to us by another friend, we would have never taken our dogs with us. It explains where good areas our to take your dogs, what to expect if you run into wildlife...bears etc. We never did, but we were prepared thanks to this book. The author did a wonderful job of reasearching all the valuable information in this book. Becuase of the information in this book, the whole family, from the kids tro the pets had a great time. If you are planning a trip to the Jackson Hole area with your pet, this is a MUST read before, and during your trip!!!

World Class Info for a World Class Spot
Does your dog dislike being left alone? More importantly, do you have a hard time leaving your dog, even for world-class travel destinations? Whether you are a would-be traveler to Jackson Hole Wyoming, or a local with a dog, this book will help and inspire you. "Doggy Doings" is, as the title says, a complete reference of information you will find nowhere else. There are chapters that will give you specific and immediately useful information such as where you can go hiking with your dog. For some reason, I particularly enjoyed the chapters with more "surprising" information: chapters that offered the kind of tidbits you like to think you never will need -- such as what to do if you and your dog encounter large wild animals -- bears or moose. The chapter on dealing with any type of emergency made for suspenseful reading. In all likelihood, most of us never will encounter those situations: the majority of the book deals with all the pleasures that you and your dog hope to find and can expect to find in one of the most beautiful spots on earth. This book, like the area it describes and helps you to access, is truly one of a kind. I highly recommend it and wish there were one like it for every area of the country. I liked how the book took into acount and reached for a true community of people, environment and animals. You will both enjoy and use this book.

Drawn by a China Moon (Trailblazer Books, 33)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (August, 2000)
Authors: Dave Jackson, Neta Jackson, and Anne Gavitt
Average review score:

Very good historical content!
Inspired by Lottie Moon Ida and her family move to the "heathen" China to become missionaries. Ida and her best friend Molly are very sad that they have to leave eachother and decide to be soul sisters and write to eachother every week.

Ida has many experiences in China. But with the more experiences the more she realizes China needs doctors and nurses horribly. She decides she wants to be a missionary nurse in China. However Ida contridicts asthma and the doctors tell her she will never be able to become a nurse. Molly upon hearing this news makes a life changing decision that will change her life forever! I won't tell you so read the book! As a Chinese-American I find the contents of the story to be very realistic. I recommend this book to everybody because it has great historical content. If you like this book you should also try reading the Dear America Series!

Highly recommended, wholesome, entertaining, informative.
Drawn By A Moon (2267-8, $5.99) introduces Mollie, who is fascinating by a letter she receives from a friend who has moved to China describing life in that far away place, as well as the remarkable work of the groundbreaking nineteenth-century missionary Lottie Moon. When her friend contracts a deadly disease, Mollie resolves to help her, even if the consequences change her life forever! Highly recommended, wholesome, entertaining, and informative, both historical novels are engagingly written to present their stories from the perspective of children just like the readers.
